FACEBOOK CHANGES NAME TO META
WHY IS FACEBOOK CHANGING ITS NAME, AND WHAT DOES META MEAN?
The company is switching to a new name with a new logo.
Mark Zuckerberg has announced his company is ditching the name Facebook.
The rebranding is part of the global company’s big plan to develop a virtual world but critics say its an attempt to shift focus from recent controversies.
Here’s what we know about Facebook going Meta.
Is Facebook changing its name?
The Facebook Company has changed its name to Meta, but the social networking app Facebook will keep its name.
It has also adopted a new logo (is it just us or does that look familiar…).
The name change is to bring the company’s “apps and technologies under one new company brand”, it said in a statement.
Since Facebook launched in 2004, the company has purchased social media apps Instagram and WhatsApp.
It has also invested in other technologies including digital wallet Novi, video-calling device Portal and virtual reality system Oculus.
A big part of the rebrand is also to focus Meta on bringing the “metaverse” to life.
But skeptics have suggested this is just an attempt to move attention away from the so-called Facebook papers.
The documents, leaked by a former Facebook employee, revealed how Facebook ignored or downplayed internal warnings about the negative and often harmful consequences its social network algorithms created or magnified across the world.
WHAT IS THE METAVERSE?
The metaverse is a virtual world you can plug yourself into and do — in theory — almost anything.
Movies like The Matrix, Ready Player One and Tryon explore the concept, and it is often depicted as a corrupt system to which people living in a dystopian society escape to (sounds like fun right?).
Mr. Zuckerberg said the metaverse would be a place where people could interact, work and create, and expects it to reach a billion people within the next decades. And while he doesn’t expect to make any money off it in the short-term, the tech mogul is throwing his weight behind the idea.
“This is not an investment that is going to be profitable for us any time in the near future,” Mr Zuckerberg told analysts.
“But we basically believe that the metaverse is going to be the successor to the mobile internet.”
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF META?
Meta is a prefix — a word put before another — that means after or or beyond, to operate at a higher level, or change.
For example, metacarpus (the finger bones after the wrist), Meta language (language used to describe another language) and metamorphosis (a change of form).
But it has another meaning in pop culture: to describe when something is being self-aware.
You see this in movies and TV shows that break the fourth wall by doing something that acknowledges the audience is watching.
But the best example of Meta is the comedy series Community.
Throughout its six seasons, the show mastered Meta from integrating part of the actors’ religion into their characters, paying homage to other shows with themed episodes, to blatantly calling out itself as a show by “doing a bottle episode”

Another example of a show that goes Meta is Rick and Morty, which is co-created by the same writer who made Community, Dan Harmon.
30 Rock, created by Tina Fey, was also well known for its meta references, particularly when Fey’s character Liz Lemon directly asked advertisers “can we have our money now?” after a product placement
